Founded in the 1890s and the site of Butch Cassidy’s first robbery, Helper is one of the most important historical and culturally diverse small towns in Utah with an exceptional community spirit. Most of the citizens in Helper have strong ties to the past. Their extraordinary characters have been chiseled from their connection to the Mining and Railroad industries and most recently to the Arts. The presence of the train and the Mining industry defined Helper and created a pocket of diversity in Utah. Helper not only became the hub of Carbon County, it also became a connector to the world. Twenty-seven different languages were spoken at the turn of the century.
The Helper Project is partnering with Donna Poulton, a renowned Utah Art Historian to curate an art exhibition, the inspiration being historic Helper, the train, the routes, and the landscape.
The exhibition will run May 3 – August 2, 2019 at Anne Jespersen Fine Arts. The opening will coincide with Helper’s First Friday event on May 3, 2019, from 6-9 pm.
